Students at Templestowe Park engage in Mathematics lessons daily. We are proud to hold accreditation as a ‘Maths Active School’ (awarded by the Mathematical Association of Victoria).
The Mathematics curriculum includes learning about Number, Algebra, Measurement, Space, Statistics and Probability. In learning about these, it is critical that students are taught to think about what they are doing to understand it in depth, to then be able to apply it in a new situation. Students will be asked to explain their thinking or to ‘prove it’ in a variety of ways to learn that understanding the process is important, not just an answer at the end. Estimation plays a vital role in knowing if an answer is reasonable.
Our Maths lessons include a daily review of previously learned content to ensure we give students practice to move things from their working memory to long term memory. This includes students working in their own individual workbook for a short part of each Maths lesson. We also engage students with mental maths activities daily for a short time to ensure they develop and maintain automaticity of number fact knowledge, counting and using efficient strategies to make calculations in their head.
Along with explicit instruction, lessons include games and practical activities to practice and learn mathematical concepts with:
TPPS is extremely well resourced with a great deal of concrete equipment to enhance the hands-on exploration of real-life mathematical concepts. Our teachers regularly use assessments to monitor student progress and to teach to the point of need.
Our students have many opportunities to further enhance their mathematical learning through a variety of competitions and additional programs. We are proud to have had multiple State winners in the MAV’s Maths Talent Quest (MTQ) over consecutive years.
